A key challenge for Cross River Rail’s canopy tubes in the Boggo Road tunnel was that, within the industry, there were limited trenchless methods capable of the project’s specific requirements.
To solve this, Bothar Group innovated and designed a specialised bespoke bidirectional retractable cutting head which had never previously been utilised on this size installation.
As a result of this innovative solution, the laser guided system was used to achieve the tight design tolerances and the modified head was developed to ensure the 102m of bored tunnel was always supported by the installed steel casing in the unlikely but possible case of ground movement.
Our key lesson from this project is that in the face of challenging conditions, creative thinking and motivation to problem-solve complex construction issues are of the highest priority. Bothar will find the right solution and deliver safely and successfully.
